Restaurant shirts have to do three different jobs — kitchen, front of house, and merchandise — and the same design rarely works for all three.

Here is how to approach each, plus what survives a service.

    Kitchen and back-of-house shirts

Restaurant name with the cook's name. Simple, and it matters in a kitchen where people are called by name across a pass. See custom chef shirts.

Station shirts. Grill, Sauté, Garde Manger, Pastry, Expo. Stations are identities in a kitchen and cooks wear them with real pride.

Brigade titles. Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, Executive Chef. Traditional, and the hierarchy is part of the culture.

"Yes Chef" on the back. Overused and still ordered constantly.

Black, always. Kitchens destroy light colours within one service. Black hides oil, sauce and the rest of it.

A practical note: these are cotton tees, not chef whites or flame-resistant gear. Most kitchens use them as an under-layer or for prep, with proper kitchen uniform on the line where required.

    Front-of-house shirts

Different brief entirely — guests are reading these.

Restaurant name, clean and legible, with nothing else. Front of house should look like the brand, not like a uniform catalogue.

First name on the chest. Guests are far more comfortable with a named server.

Role on the back. Host, Server, Bar. Helps guests find the right person.

Colour as a signal. One colour for servers, another for bar, another for management. Guests work it out without being told.

    Food truck and catering shirts

For a food truck the shirt is signage that walks around.

Truck name large with the social handle. Food trucks live on Instagram — the handle is how people find where you are parked tomorrow.

The menu item you are known for. If one dish built the business, put it on the shirt.

Event and festival shirts with the year. These sell to customers at the window.

Catering crew shirts with the company name, readable across a function room.

Jokes that land in a kitchen

Kitchen humour is darker than most trades. Keep the sharper ones off the floor.

    "Behind. Corner. Hot. Move."

"I Did Not Burn It. It Is Caramelised."

    "Substitutions Politely Declined."

    "The Customer Is Sometimes Right."

"86 Everything." Understood instantly by anyone who has worked service.

"Sleep Is For People With Day Jobs."

"Mise En Place Or Chaos. Choose."

"I Cook. You Eat. We Do Not Negotiate."

    Shirts guests will buy

Restaurants with a following sell shirts, and the rules are the same as any merchandise: clean design, no phone number, no menu.

    Restaurant name or logo only.

    Anniversary shirts. "Est. 2009 · 15 Years."

The signature dish as a graphic.

Limited colour runs tied to a season.

Fifteen or more at 25% off is what makes the retail margin work.

    Organising a restaurant order

Order generously. Restaurant turnover is high and shirts get wrecked. Twenty instead of fifteen is cheaper per shirt.

Collect sizes on a form, not verbally during service.

Ask for the full size range, S through 5XL.

Check name spellings at proof stage.

    Ordering

No minimum — one shirt or sixty. Fifteen or more gets 25% off. Different names and roles on every shirt cost nothing extra. No setup or artwork fees, including redrawing your restaurant logo. Free design proof. S–5XL at $25, $28 and $30.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can each shirt have a different name or station?
Yes, at no extra cost, and the order still counts toward the 15-shirt discount.

Are these chef whites or flame resistant?

    What is the minimum order?
    None.
