Custom Welder Shirt Ideas for Shops, Crews and Rigs
Custom welder shirt ideas for shops, crews and rigs — company shirts, process jokes, apprentice gifts and what to know about shirts near a welding arc.
In this article
Welders are particular about shirts, and for good reason — most of what gets sold as "welder apparel" is designed by people who have never stood in front of an arc.
Here is what actually works for shop shirts, crew orders and gifts, plus one practical note about what to wear near sparks.
Shop and company shirts
Company name with the welder's name. The standard. Shop name across the back, first name on the front left chest. Different name on every shirt at no extra cost — see custom welder shirts.
Company name with a phone number. For owner-operators, the shirt is advertising. Put the number somewhere readable from ten feet.
Certification shirts. "AWS D1.1 Certified" or whatever tickets the shop holds. Clients notice.
Process-specific shirts. TIG, MIG, Stick, Flux-core. Welders identify strongly with process and the differences are a running argument in every shop.
Rig welder shirts with the truck name or number.
Years in the trade. "Burning Rod Since 2004."
Process jokes that land
The test for any trade joke is whether someone outside the trade would understand it. If they would, it is probably too generic.
- "TIG Is Just Welding In Slow Motion." Starts fights. Deliberately.
- "If You Can Grind It, You Can Weld It."
- "Stick Welder. I Do Not Need Shielding Gas Or Your Opinion."
- "My Welds Are Prettier Than Yours."
- "Flash Burn Survivor." Universally understood, universally regretted.
- "Measure Twice. Cut Once. Grind Forever."
- "It Is Not A Leak. It Is A Design Feature."
- "I Can Fix What Your Welder Did." For the shop that does repair work.
Apprentice and school shirts
"Welding Class of 2027" with every name on the back.
Apprentice shirts. Self-deprecating by tradition.
Journeyman shirts for the day the ticket comes through.
Trade school program shirts with the school and program name. These order in batches of 20 to 40, well into the discount.
Gift shirts
If you are buying for a welder and you are not one:
- Their name and the shop they work for beats any slogan.
- Name the process they actually run. A TIG welder given a stick-welding joke will notice.
- Dry over sentimental. Nothing about "the hands that built America."
- Dark colours. Practical, and what they already wear.
A practical note on shirts near an arc
Worth being straightforward about: these are cotton t-shirts, not flame-resistant workwear. They are not a substitute for proper FR clothing under a welding jacket.
In practice most shop shirts get worn to and from work, in the office, at trade shows and on the weekend — with proper FR gear going on for the actual welding. Order accordingly, and do not let a company shirt replace the gear that keeps someone safe.
Cotton is the right choice for the off-the-tools hours, though: it breathes better than polyester and it does not melt, which matters if a stray spark finds you in the yard.
Organising a shop order
Collect names and sizes on paper or a form. Not verbally across a noisy shop.
Ask about large sizes explicitly. We print S–5XL. People rarely volunteer the bigger ones.
Check every name at the proof stage. A misspelled name on a shop shirt is permanent as far as the crew is concerned.
Order spares. Shop shirts get destroyed. Ordering 20 when you need 15 is sensible, and it gets you the discount.
Ordering
No minimum — one shirt or sixty. Fifteen or more gets 25% off. Different names on every shirt cost nothing extra. No setup or artwork fees, including setting up your shop logo. Free design proof before printing. S–5XL at $25, $28 and $30.
Send us your logo — even a photo of it off a truck door — and we will redraw it clean at no charge. Related trades: custom mechanic shirts, construction crew shirts and custom electrician shirts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these shirts flame resistant?
No. These are cotton t-shirts, not FR workwear, and they are not a substitute for proper gear under a welding jacket. Most shop shirts get worn off the tools.
Can every shirt have a different welder's name?
Yes, at no extra cost, and the order still counts toward the 15-shirt discount.
Can you use my shop logo?
Yes. Send whatever you have, even a photo of it on a truck door, and we will redraw it cleanly at no charge.
What is the minimum order?
None. One shirt is fine. Fifteen or more gets 25% off.
What sizes do you offer?
S through 5XL. S–XL $25, 2XL–3XL $28, 4XL–5XL $30.
